Welcome

Hello, my name is Chloe Porter and this is my digital portfolio for my application in Fashion Styling at Southampton Solent, throughout my portfolio you will see various different projects I have created and also a written piece of work.

Children's soft toy

For this project I was set the task of creating a children's toy which would also be educational for the child, my idea was to create a height chart for children aged 1- 4 years old, I researched into existing products to understand what worked well and what doesn't in a children's educational toy.

I created my design ideas where I designed various different children's toys, from these I developed my best ideas further and then narrowed it down to one design for my final design. I came up with the idea of creating a height chart not only was it educational but it was interactive with the child, they were able to move the arrow up and down, it was also easily compactable as it wrapped up into a bag to make it easy to travel with if needed.

This is a diary of making of the stages I went through to create my educational height chart,  I used various different sewing methods such as appliqué,  I used interfacing to make the material thicker and easier to sew onto, I also ensured small elements such as buttons were sewn on securely for it not to be a chocking hazard.

This is my final product in the testing stage, I then interviewed the mother of the toddler to give feedback on what she felt was good and bad about the product.

A2 coursework- Product Design

This project is what I am currently working on for my A level coursework, the project is about re-designing a product to make it better. My idea is to recreate the lunch box this is because of the issue of it not being able to keep food chilled for a long period of time and to also make the aesthetic of the lunch box more attracting to children.

Research
I researched into the history of a lunchbox and created a timeline of how the lunchbox has changed and developed over the years, I then looked at different trends of what lunch boxes children like to have, my research showed children tend to have their favourite character from a film or TV programme on the front of the lunch bag.

This is the summary of the research I collated and also my specification to revert back to when designing my lunchbox ideas, each point is colour coded for me to refer to throughout the designing stage.
Design ideas

I wanted my design ideas to be bold and appealing to my target audience who are young children between the age of 3-6 years old, next to my design sheet are different images which gave me inspiration for my ideas. The coloured boxing next to the annotated designs, is me referring back to the specification.
Modelling

This is the modelling stage of my best design ideas to develop further, the decision was made by interviewing my client who is a nursery teacher, where she gave me information on what designs she liked and disliked.
Developing design ideas further

Currently I am at the stage of developing my design ideas, from the feedback I received,  from this I am making amendments to aspects people I feel need to be improved for example the ergonomics of the handle for the bag and the design of the bag.

1960's Fashion

This project is about 1960s fashion with the outcome of recreating a look from the 60s but also giving it a modern day look to it.

Research
To start off my project I created a mood board on the 1960s fashion, from this I gathered loads of different images of iconic figures of the era, colours and also styles and trends.

This then followed an in depth research on the Fashion in the 1960s, I looked into the trends of that era, the different styles of hair and make up that was worn. I then looked into present day designers who are replicating the style (e.g Valentino, Marc Jacobs) from the 60s for the upcoming spring/ summer collection of 2015 and previous seasons.

Before starting my designing, I researched into patterns and prints of the 60s, so I could apply the research I found, to the prints of the clothing I will create. I got a lot of inspiration from 'Emilio Pucci' who was a huge fashion designer in the 60s and known for his vibrant prints and patterns. The prints I designed have very bold aesthetic and abstract shapes. In the 60s patterns tend to be copied repeatedly so attempted this with acrylic paints

These are the design ideas I created, they have inspiration from the 1960s and also upcoming and trends of today. I then also designed what the make up would look like gaining a lot of inspiration from Twiggy's make up in the 1960s.

Final outcome
For my final piece I created the look of design idea 3, the inspiration for this Photoshoot was a massive icon in the 1960s; 'Twiggy', the style I created was a 60s looks but also adding a modern day look to it.
For the hair I created a bouffant which was a common hairstyle in the 60s, my model wore a geometric shirt but made the look more modern by wearing jeans, the make up was very natural apart from the eyes as this was the main focus point in the 1960s.

This is the final looks I created.

Evaluation

For my written piece of work, I have choose my most recent evaluation for my A2 coursework in Film Studies, I created a screenplay called 'The Secret Locket', which is about a young girl who has lived in an orphanage her whole life, but then 14 years later she gets caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnesses a man murder a women, but this man is no stranger it is in fact her father. However they are not aware of this until the father sees the locket around her neck which they gave to her when she was a baby.

This written piece of work is me evaluating the screenplay I created:
